3 Firehouse Brewing Co. Food Choices and Reasons for All of Them

Whether it’s lunch or dinner, the Firehouse Brewing Co. in Rapid City, South Dakota never disappoints. It’s a classic must-try food spot completely decked out with authentic firefighting memorabilia from its original purpose. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed. They have live musical entertainment on most weekends and outstanding theatre productions at the Firehouse Theatre, located just above the restaurant. It’s a place that hits home for me and my papa, who you could always find indulging in exquisite craft brews at the bar.

I often eat a meal here, but this is the first time I tried something new. The menu choices would have probably turned out completely different if I had been eating alone (except for the dessert). But I am super happy that my husband tagged along, because in the 21 years that I have been living here, this was one of my most satisfying lunch experiences. This fabulous meal that I am about the fully disclose was demolished during lunchtime and I give you three reasons for every decision made.

Oh, and it’s “The Firehouse”, if you want to be in with the locals. 

 

The Meal

Beverage: Water

A colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms.

I can’t believe I just told you that. When going to South Dakota’s oldest operating brewery, one should get a beer. Even though it nearly killed me, there is a method to this madness. In fact, I have three reasons:

Reason #1 It was lunchtime during the work week.
Reason #2 A busy afternoon at the office doesn’t pair well with a relaxing beer unless you're having a creative brainstorm session, which (unfortunately) was not on the agenda.
Reason #3 Please see reason number one and two.

Side note: If I went during the evening or on a weekend, I would have got something that looks like the tall, crisp glass you see above. And then celebrated 25 years of brewing outstanding craft beer.

Appetizer: Calamari

Prepared in-house and fried to perfection. Served with pepperoncini, cocktail sauce and Tzatsiki sauce.

I usually save appetizers for evening meals, but I was starving. And even though The Firehouse is known for their fast service, I probably would have fallen off of my chair if I had to wait for the entrée. There are three reasons why Calamari made the cut:

Reason #1 I wanted to be a good wife, so I compromised with my husband on an appetizer. Happy husband, happy wife, happy life…right?!
Reason #2 Tzatziki sauce is one of the only reasons I eat gyro sandwiches.
Reason #3 Calamari is always a good go-to option that almost everyone I know enjoys.

Side note: If it were completely my choice, I would have got the Cheesy Artichoke Dip. It’s a Firehouse specialty paired with their famous toasted garlic beer bread and it’s sensational. But don’t get me wrong! The Calamari is superb and completely satisfying.

Lunch Entree: Reuben

Rapid City’s Best! Thinly sliced corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese stacked high on marble-rye bread, grilled and paired with a side of Reuben sauce.

I am going to be completely honest with you. Me choosing and eating this entire entrée is not something that would have happened if it weren’t for three reasons:

Reason #1 The very convincing entrée description that says “Rapid City’s Best”, followed by an exclamation point. Very exciting.
Reason #2 Marble-rye bread is the bee’s knees.
Reason #3 My husband assuring me that sauerkraut is delicious if paired with other food items correctly.

Side note: Ordering this was a big step for me. I usually think of sauerkraut on a hot dog and cringe. Despite my fear, it was as mouthwatering as that photo.

Dessert: Blackout

Homemade brownie marbled with cream cheese. Served with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup.

Okay, Blackout. You had me at marbled cream cheese. Like 15 years ago when my papa made me take my first bite. There are three reasons why you are on my favorite-desserts-on-the-entire-planet list:

Reason #1 You are warm. Enough said.
Reason #2 Your mouthwatering layers of cream cheese, rich chocolate and golden crust are an unmatched combination.
Reason #3 You are delicate, yet dense.

Side note: My favorite-desserts-on-the-entire-planet list is really tough to get on. It consists of a warm delicious chocolate pastry dessert from Spain (which I can never remember the name of and I’ll be lucky if I find it again someday), a to-die-for apple pie from Slug and Lettuce in London and of course peanut butter shakes from anywhere.
