Big, Bold Flavors Where The Buffalo Roam
Read up on the history of the Great Plains and you’ll find that Buffalo were by far the main food source for Plains people who populated the area. Packed with protein and versatile in many dishes, today you’ll find fearless flavors of this South Dakota favorite in restaurants throughout the Black Hills. Below, I’ve rounded up my favorite buffalo dishes from local Rapid City restaurants that truly bring the heat.
Buffalo Meatloaf, Murphy’s Pub & Grill
Everything is better with bacon. Even buffalo. Murphy’s Pub & Grill in Downtown Rapid City is voted the best pub in the Black Hills and with one trip here, you’ll understand why. Not only do they feature the region’s specialty wrapped in bacon, stuffed with Portobello mushrooms, topped with asparagus and fried onions, Murphy’s has a stellar atmosphere to go with it. Housed in a historic building dating back to 1911, you’ll find a plethora of rustic accents, exposed brick walls and a cozy 4,000 foot patio equipped with two fire pits that might make you feel right at home.
Appetizer Pick: Fancy Fried Pickles. You won’t regret it.
Buffalo Short Ribs, Stonewalls Kitchen
Situated on the gateway road leading to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial, Stonewalls Kitchen is a convenient and can’t-pass-by stop after a day spent sightseeing. Locals and visitors rave about their stone oven pizza and bread and they often have regulars that stop by once or twice a week for a downright scrumptious meal. If you love ribs, try their half pound of Buffalo Short Ribs slow roasted and braised in a red wine reduction. This entrée comes with two sides and includes their homemade stone oven bread.
Buffalo Satay Skewers, Dakotah Steakhouse
Peanut lovers unite! Dakotah Steakhouse serves up skewers of lean buffalo marinated in Asian inspired sauce and a side of spicy peanut sauce to dip. This steakhouse definitely hit the spot in my book and once you experience the aesthetics of the building, it might just hit yours too. With décor inspired by the history of this area, it’s truly a reflection of South Dakota with country touches and a hearty meal.
For Desert: Top the meal off with Silvery Lining Ice Cream made right here in the Black Hills, checking off two local foodie stops in one fell swoop.
Enjoy It At Home, Wild Idea Buffalo Co.
What if I told you that Chocolate Buffalo Brownies are a real thing (no joke!). Or at least Wild Idea Buffalo Co. says they are. This butcher shop is the leading provider of 100% prairie grass fed buffalo in the United States and its right here in Rapid City. Their free roaming, locally sourced buffalo includes subtle notes of grass, sage and they swear – sunshine. If you so much try the buffalo dishes listed above on your vacation in Rapid City, Wild Idea Buffalo Co. gives you the opportunity to enjoy a South Dakota favorite at home with the ability to ship nationwide. You’ll even be provided outstanding recipes like Corned Buffalo on Black Rye, Buffalo Antipasto Pasta Salad, and the strange, but secretly delicious Chocolate Buffalo Brownies I mentioned above.
