An Exotic Experience: Reptile Encounter in the Black Hills
One of our favorite places in Rapid City opened up for the season recently, Reptile Gardens. The girls (excuse me, little science nerd alert coming up here) love it, I love it! It's a place where every time you go you see something different. It’s fascinating to see the different kinds of creatures we share the Earth with, breathtaking some of them.
The first time we went, the girls were able to see the Gator Show, Bird Show and the Snake Show which is hilarious if you've never been. Our middle daughter was feeling brave and pumped like she was going to take on the world. Needless to say, she jumped about ten feet once the hidden snake was revealed, it was hilarious to see! Especially since at the beginning of the snake show they very clearly say "sorry no volunteers", it is too dangerous. Even so, she was totally ready to tackle this adventure. They also got to pet Fluffy the little baby gator – absolutely adorable! It was very hot that day so they weren't super active, but still impressive none the less.
If you need a break from the outdoors, head to the Sky Dome and walk through the Safari Room. It’s much like a rain forest – full of exotic plants, flowers, snakes, lizards and really big bugs! While I've never actually been to a rain forest, I imagine this is pretty dang close. The beauty takes your breath away and it’s truly a magical experience. Take your time going through it so that you can really soak it all in. Now, if your five-year-old wants to rip around and check everything out right away, good luck. But if you have success like we eventually did, she settled down and really realized the Sky Dome’s magnificence.
To help keep our five-year-old's attention we headed to Methuselah’s Playground and then Bewitched Village. Their favorite part was the old jail and wanted posters! After that there was still time for the Giant Tortoise Yard were you can experience gentle giants up close. There truly is something for everyone.
If you get a chance to stop by Reptile Gardens on your next visit to Rapid City, it’s definitely worth it. You don't have to be a science nerd like we are, but it's one of those places where you'll go back again and again.
