Get Lost, Play Tag…Be Brave
One of my family’s favorite things to do in the hills is go hiking. There are so many fantastic places to go, and so many different trails to adventure and explore all angles of the beautiful Black Hills. We like to stay close to home every now and again, so finding a new place that is exciting and fun for the kids after three years of hiking can be challenging. Sometimes, actually finding them is the challenge! Many are marked with old markers, or people want to keep them pure so very few indicators are given that they are there. So this one, well, I thought it would be in a different location then is was…again, half the battle was finding it. Boy was that a hand-to-forehead moment – ha!
The Rock Maze was about 100 yards off the road, just across from the parking lot! All I had to do was turn around and there it was! Just outside of Nemo is an amazing rock formation that allows visitors to wind in and out of crevasses and huge boulders. There was still some snow and ice when we went on our visit, but you could see the potential for several hours of fun.
Since we were limited on time, we took advantage of every second. Our older girls, 15 and 13, tried to stay out of mom and dad’s sight, while our 8-year-old, hung by my side and climbed everything she could. I spent my time mapping out the perfect spots for hide and seek! Just on the other side of the rock maze and down the hill is a quaint little creek, nestled in the setting of tall pines, rock and quiet nature. The perfect getaway to think, read, or just relax.
On the other side of the road, where we parked, is a day-pass picnic area. Truly, this gem between Rapid City and Nemo is the perfect way to spend an afternoon with the family.
