Make Unbearably Perfect Memories at Bear Country USA

Of the many critters roaming the Black Hills, surprisingly, Bears are not one among those native to the area. I know, I was shocked too! Thankfully, there is a place that brings the missing piece of the puzzle to the forefront, Bear Country U.S.A. Now, it isn’t just bears at this beautiful facility. You can see many wildlife native to the Black Hills as well.

As you drive up to the gates, one almost gets the feeling of being on a Jurassic Park tour; you know, sitting in the car looking around trying to find the animals, and trying to figure out if you are on display or if they are…only to have a bear sneak up on you and show up in your window! The one lane road leads you on a slow tour of 250-acres of Elk, Reindeer, Arctic Wolf, Big Horn Sheep, Buffalo, Mountain Lion, Timberwolf and of course Black Bear.

The bears are the highlight of the tour, sometimes pacing in front of the entrance to their section of the park like guards while drivers hesitate to go. Depending on the day, of course, they are playful, sometimes they fight, often they are in the pools, but the thing is, they are just being themselves. The draw of course, is that we rarely see them in such a way, so it is fun and extremely interesting to watch.

Once you have weaved your way through the tour, visitors are encouraged to get out and see the babies! It’s so fun to watch the little ones frolic without a care in the world.

The best time of the year to go, and where we officially fell in love, was in April, the day we got to meet the babies. Yes! The baby bears were brought out and we could watch them play up close, touch them, pet them….an amazing experience! They call it CubFest and is so totally worth it!  But if you are visiting this Fall, Bear Country is one of the few attractions that remain open. You can still see the babies just not up close. It’s still an amazing experience.

Things to keep in mind while visiting Bear Country, no soft-top vehicles allowed. Sometimes the bears get a little friendly and damage can occur. Also, these are wild animals, when it says keep windows up, it is for a reason.

This is perfect for all ages and abilities as most of it can be experienced without leaving your vehicle.
