The Most Exciting Social Event Of The Summer
Thursday’s are one of the best days to be in Downtown Rapid City for the family. The town comes alive in the evening with the Summer Nights concerts.
Our first time down there we weren't sure what to expect, so we planted ourselves at Main Street Square and waited for the fun to begin. We were excited about the prospect of a Beach Boys style band but, Thursday night isn’t just about the concert there also was carnival games and amazing street food. The place was packed, apparently, concert goers knew something we didn't and had their chairs lined up early. Lucky for us the stairs in the way back of the square are perfect chairs. The concert started on time and the crowd was immediately drawn in by covers of Surfin’ USA and Good Vibrations. The crowd was lovin’ it! Many were acting out their best surfing moves, including our six-year-old!
Once they headed to into break we decided to stretch some little legs and walk around Downtown to see what else there was. As we walked through the beautiful Art Alley, we were greeted by vendors and artists alike, proud to show us their talents.
Upon coming out two blocks down from where we started we were surprised to see an entirely different concert going on with a band playing more current music. They played a mix of pop, country and rock; definitely a different group of concert goers! No chairs here, everyone was on their feet. Our girls (ages 12, 10 & 6) loved every second of it, they were dancing and singing and having a blast! The mix of people Downtown was amazing. Everyone was well behaved and having fun! Something else that makes Thursday nights so nice, how clean the Downtown area is, which is exactly what you want for at a street dance.
The best part of this event is the concerts are completely free! There is a small cost for the carnival style games, of course, the food comes with a cost and alcohol is available for those of age. The concerts start in June and go into September. Check your inhibitions at your car door, put on your dancin’ shoes and head on down for the fun!
