Top 5 Spring Break Ideas for Cool Moms

I have to say how thankful I am to have these five amazing places right in my backyard! These are places and activities my family (there are 5 of us, three kids ages 6, 11 & 13 and a puppy!!) visits and does over and over again!

The City of Presidents

Downtown Rapid City has tons to offer, fantastic shopping, quaint locally owned restaurants and America’s Past Presidents. That’s right; you can walk the streets of Rapid City with America’s finest leaders. This free adventure through history offers a chance to see life-sized bronze statues. You can hold hands with JFK and John Jr., shout from the rooftops with Harry S. Truman or throw out a pitch with William Howard Taft. The City of Presidents is great for all ages and provides a hidden history lesson that’s lots of fun! This is an easy walk to stretch legs for the kiddos with many places to stop if need be. Our girls are pretty sure they know them all now, so we quiz them as we walk by!

Custer State Park

Custer State Park is the perfect place to see all of the best parts of South Dakota wrapped into one. There is something for everyone, hiking trails, camping, water sports, sight-seeing and a chance to get up close and personal with some wildlife! This is one of our family’s favorite places to go because every time it is something different. Honestly, we could spend an entire day here or weekend. The girls love the drive through and when we stop to let them climb the rocks. The hiking trails are breathtaking and vary in difficulty making it ideal for any family. All of our kids can make it up Black Elk Peak but some trails are a more difficult for little ones. Make sure you do a little research before your hike to find the perfect trail for your family. Sylvan Lake is the perfect setting for non-motorized water sports. And there is no shortage of fantastic animals to see along Wildlife Loop. Be sure to use caution and keep your distance as they are wild animals.

Rush Mountain Adventure Park

An unexpected gem hidden in the Black Hills, Rush Mountain Adventure Park has something for everyone! As a mom, I found there are so many great things about this attraction. The staff and customer service are amazing! Add that to their ala carte pricing on the activities or bundling with discounts, this attraction is ideal for families. A bit of advice, consider the bundling packages. The Mountain Coaster, Soaring Eagle Zip Line and 7-D gunslinger will have your kids begging to go again and again! The surprising thrill for us came from the 7-D gunslinger, it's an interactive movie and game all in one, and definitely gets your heart racing! The Soaring Eagle is cool as you zoom through the trees, but it's the ride back up the hill that provides the surprise and a beautiful view of the hills around you! Their newest attraction the Mountain Coaster is perfect for the teenager that wants to explore by themselves and the little ones that want in on the fun. This ride is perfect for the whole family because little ones can ride, with an adult of course. You can choose your speed, which is perfect for older kids who want to zoom down the hill and little ones who might need to take it a little slower. The rides and games aren’t the only attractions you’ll find, your kids will love the built in geology and history lesson during a tour of Rushmore Cave. Be sure to have clothes for all temperatures as the cave stays around 40 degrees year round.

Fishing Mady-Josh Lk Dalton 2016 (2).jpg

One of my happy places is being on or near the water. Since Rapid City has so many lakes, rivers and reservoirs the fishing is amazing! Even if you don’t have a boat you can enjoy the water standing on the dock or shore, or you can be reeled in by the chance to go fly fishing. Plus, fishing is a great way to reconnect as a family. While you wait for a bite you can enjoy each other’s company and teach your kiddos about the nature that surrounds you. What dad doesn’t love a good fishing day? There's no chance he will object to taking a day and relaxing by the lake. My family always feels closer after a good long day of fishing.

Reptile Gardens

My girls love it, I love it; it's a place you go and see something different every time. The first time we went the girls and I saw the alligator show, the bird show and snake show, which is hilarious if you've never been to any! The staff and animals are extremely interactive, which makes for an excellent show! The girls loved getting to pet the little baby alligator and the big snake. Once the shows are complete, you have to take your kids through the beautiful Botanical Gardens. It’s basically an indoor rain forest that will take your breath away, its beauty is different than anything we have in the Hills. As you and your little ones or big ones walk through this magnificent garden take your time so you can really see everything. This attraction is one that you have to stop at because it's worth it. Believe me, your kids will want to go back again and again and so will you!

Being a cool mom is easy just take your family to Rapid City. There’s something for every age. Your family will have so much fun next spring break, they’ll be begging you to come back!
